Maalifushi’s eco-credentials are pretty squeaky clean: the hotel’s fruit and vegetables are locally sourced or grown in the onsite gardens and the hotel’s bottled water is recycled; power is generated through high-efficiency generators and guests are encouraged to change their linen and towels every other day. Transport around the island is mainly by bicycles, tricycles and electric golf carts, keeping carbon emissions to a minimum.

Things to do

If exploring locally is what you’re after, you’re about to book the wrong holiday. All adventures on the island are subaquatic and run by the hotel – it’s the only man-made structure for miles. Wannabe mermaids and mermen can go on private snorkelling and scuba diving tours, check out the local surf breaks or try their hand at catamaran sailing, kayaking and paddle boarding. Boat buffs can sail to a nearby island for a gourmet picnic or keep an eye out for dolphins on a sunset cruise. Set up shop at the Como Shambhala spa, which offers treatments in eight overwater, ocean-facing rooms. Yoga, meditation, Pilates and circuit training are also on offer, all for free.

Sunny days

There will be many of these, and they will be spent on, under or next to the water. The hotel offers full PADI courses, and for those who already have their card, there are three dives a day with 20 sites to choose from. Snorkelling equipment is available for free, or you can take guided tours of the coral reef. Night snorkelling tours are open to anyone aged 7 and up. Tour prices begin at $25 per hour for adults, some cost more and some require a minimum of two hours. If you'd rather bob along on a boat, there are dolphin-spotting cruises or 'splash net' cruises (you loll in cargo nets off the side of the boat and let the water splash over you). Private charters and fishing trips are also available. The beach has shallow, paddling-friendly water for a long way out.

Rainy days

These should be rare, but when they strike, little ones can be packed off to the kids' club while grown ups head to the spa. There are PlayStation 3 consoles in rooms, and the area by Thila has massive TVs showing movies and sport, plus video games.

And there's more…

Junior agriculturalists might like to explore the gardens, where fruit and veg are grown for the hotel.

Smith tip

The north-west shore is the best for family-friendly snorkling.

Don't miss…

The Robinson Crusoe family picnic: boat to a nearby island for lunch.

You local area amounts to the island itself and the bright blue Indian Ocean. Amble among the gardens and play (or flop) on the beach. Otherwise, all your exploration is likely to be sub aquatic.
