Need To Know

12 noon; check-in, from 2pm (flexible, on request). Late check-outs may rack up an additional night’s fee; be sure to check with staff before delaying departure.

Double rooms from $291.01, including tax at 21 per cent.

More details

Rates include daily sunset canapés, movies in the Lunaplex cinema, the services of a studio attendant and WiFi. Breakfast is usually excluded. Children Cribs (for under-4s) and extra beds (free for under-12s) are available on request (teens can stay for US$75 a night, including breakfast), and can be added to Studios. Babysitting is included in rates and can be arranged with two hours’ notice (or 24, if it’s a night slot).

If you want to be pampered whilst keeping an eye on your water babies, book a spa treament by the pool. Health and fitness programmes with a personal trainer can be arranged at the pool podium, Fuel Station: pick from box-fit on the beach to yoga in Space (personal trainers can also tailor sessions to kids’ needs).

Hotel closed

No check-ins or check-outs are allowed on 17 April 2018, when Bali observes Nyepi Day (Day of Silence), although stays are still possible. Bali’s airport also closes for the day.

At the hotel

Private cinema, swimming pool, restaurant, underground night club, DVDs and games, free WiFi throughout. Each studio has a kitchenette with a hob, sink, pots, pans, cutlery and plates.

In your room

Two flatscreen TVs and a retro Brionvega set, iPad, preloaded iPod with dock, stash of board games (including Twister and Connect Four), maxibar, Smeg fridge, Nespresso machine.

Our favourite rooms

We love the three open-plan Grand Studios, which have a floating kitchen island counter that seats four, designed for in-room dining. These studios also have plenty of lounge space, a Brionvega TV with headphones (so children can watch cartoons without disrupting mum and dad), a circular sofa and a large balcony overlooking the pool. If you’re here with teens, book the groovy-baby Sunset Studio, which has its own bar and on-loan bartender plus two balconies, so you can spy on the stars at night and the ocean, pool and sunset by day. (Don’t be surprised if Smith Junior ends up in your capsule-style king-size bed.) This bright-blue studio has an in-room dining area that seats four and can connect to one of the Grand Studios, making it a good choice for larger families. Both the Grand Studios and the Sunset Studio have an ensuite bathroom with a bath tub and rainhead shower.

Fancy some poolside tunes but forgot your iPod? Take a deep breath and disappear beneath the surface of Luna's pool to listen to the underwater beats pumping out. Lined with Mondrian-inspired, colour-block mosaics, the pool is surrounded by loungers for those who’d rather keep their heads above water and recline with a granita (or something boozy). The swimming pool has a shallow end and welcomes water babies at all times; arm-bands and swimming aids can be supplied.

There isn't a spa, but pampering treatments can be arranged (either in-room, or by the pool).

Launch your intergalactic dining experience at Orbit, the bright-white eatery splashed with pops of sunflower -yellow. The chef has a talent for reworking nostalgic British classics, so expect to see items such as strawberry Eton mess sitting alongside more sophisticated offerings: pork belly with spiced pork cheek, and chicken ballantine with foie gras boudin.

Family fare

Children are welcome in Orbit, which has a 'junior gastronauts' menu (dishes include prawn cocktail, garlic snails and lemon meringue pie). Highchairs can be provided. Parents will love the ‘maxibar’: a Smeg fridge in each studio; Smith Junior (and sweet-toothed adults) will love the Chupa Chups stashed away in them.

Hotel Bar

From Orbit, a spiral staircase descends into Pop! Lounge Bar, an underground drinking den decked out in purples, shocking pinks and silver, with an illuminated dance-floor, perfect for busting out new-age moves. A DJ spins until the early hours while guests sip creative cocktails and premium spirits. Closer to the heavens, Space is a rooftop bar with sweeping ocean views, a satellite kitchen and DJ booth. From 4pm–10pm, guests can indulge in the 'Space champagne and caviar' experience (with a few oysters thrown in), while they watch the sunset.

Last orders

Breakfast is served in Orbit between 7am and 11am. Food is served at Space between 4pm and 8pm; 6pm and 2am at Pop! and between 3.30pm and midnight at the cinema. Drinks flow at rooftop drinking hole, Space, until 8pm; 2am at Pop! Children are welcome in the former; it's adults-only in the latter.

Smith Insider

  • Top table

If you’ve booked babysitters and are dining à deux, book the bubble dining window at Orbit, overlooking the pool; if you’re en famille, sit companionably on cushioned houndstooth.

  • Room service

Order warm milk or other baby and kiddy essentials from the room service menu. An ‘in-flight dining’ menu is available 6pm–10pm, with dishes such as truffled chicken or Angus beef served with a starter, side salad, bread, cheese, and a dessert (there are less rich options for children, too). If the midnight munchies hit, order from the late-night menu of simple snacks and hearty mains, available between 10pm and 2am.

Just let staff know if you'd like your Smeg fridge pre-stocked with particular drinks and nibbles before you arrive.

Things to do

Kids will love the private cinema, which is also used as an indoor play area and stocked with retro games (we’re talking Twister, Connect Four and so on). Everyone will love the colourful outside pool, where you can have spa treatments or fitness sessions. Just a short walk away, Seminyak’s beach and boutiques await. Staff can also organise cultural experiences and local excursions – just ask.

Hotel activities

Lunaplex, the hotel’s 16-seat cinema, hosts daily screenings of both old and new flicks. Sit back in one of the plush recliners and let your ‘flight attendant’ bring you popcorn, home-made ice-cream, popcorn-inspired cocktails and icy champagne. Kids can choose from fresh fruit juices and fizzy pop. There are plenty of films for young ’uns to choose from; let staff know if there’s a particular flick you’re keen on watching. The hotel has a kids’ co-ordinator who will organise swimming lessons and kids’ fitness sessions by the pool, as well as cookery classes and yoga (on request, for an extra cost). All guests have temporary membership to the Canggu Club, Bali’s premier sports and recreational facilities. If sister hotel Luna2 Private is unoccupied, the chef will hold cookery classes for kids, rustling up brownies, pizzas and other favourites.

And there's more…

The orange Brionvega TVs in each studio should tickle little ones’ imaginations – it resembles a box that Dr Who would covet.

Smith tip

Head to Seminyak's coolest beach venue Ku De Ta for sunset cocktails with a spectacular view. Book a babysitter, or swing by for Family Dayze on Sundays, 12 noon til 4pm: face-painting, bouncy castles and kids' activities, as well as delicious food.

Don't miss…

… a big breakfast or early brunch at local deli Grocer & Grind in Seminyak (+62 361 730418): amazing streaky bacon 'brekkie burgers', savoury pancakes, treaty-topped sourdough toast and smoothies. Later on, there are pizzas, hawker dishes and more.

Beachy Bali is a great location for families, thanks to its safe beaches and wealth of outdoor activities, and Luna2 Studiotel has an ideal Seminyak setting: the beach is within spitting distance (as are the area’s best boutiques and bars, for credit-card-wielding mums and dads). Cultural excursions and family-friendly activities can easily be arranged, and there’s plenty of scope to learn a new skill in Bali, whether that’s straddling a surfboard in the ocean or wielding local spices in the kitchen.

Waterbom Bali in Kuta is a watery wonderland for the young and young at heart, where you can race down waterslides that slice through lush tropical gardens, float down Lazy River and sip a stirred or shaken concoction at the sunken pool bar. Expect rides for every age group, tot-friendly pools and parent-pleasing extras.

Getting There

A 40-minute car-hop out of Denpasar, Luna2 sits alongside its sister hotel Luna2 Private Hotel in the heart of sociable Seminyak. It’s only a short stroll to the beach; whichever way your feet lead, you’ll happen across a feast of restaurants and bars.

Fly into Bali Airport (Ngurah Rai) in the island’s capital, Denpasar, which is a 30-minute drive from Luna2. The Visa On Arrival charge is US$35 a person.

If you’ve got the gumption to tackle Denpasar’s chaotic traffic and common traffic jams, Luna2 has a car park adjacent to the hotel and also provides valet parking. However, the most sensible way to arrive is with the hotel’s VIP chauffeur service (for an extra cost; prices vary depending on the service chosen): you’ll be whisked through customs, whooshed into a sleek 'Lunamobile' with cold towels, cold drinks, salty snacks and a menu of tunes, to get you in the mood for what’s to come.

Parent travel tip

Take the stress out of arrival by booking the hotel’s VIP chauffeur service for an extra cost (prices vary, depending on the level of service chosen). You’ll be whisked through customs and whooshed into a sleek 'Lunamobile' with cold towels, cold drinks and salty snacks. Kids will enjoy selecting music from the menu of tunes (we listened to Michael Jackson).

Smith & Family  Parent Panel reviews

Every property featured in the Smith & Family collection – including Luna2 Studiotel – has been selected and approved by parents.

Ever wanted to go to space but somehow not quite made it? Luna2 Studiotel will let you and your family live out your futuristic fantasies (spaceship/Princess Leia not included). More Nasa-chic than beachside bolthole, Luna2 ditches a classic understated aesthetic for bespoke furnishings, smatterings of metallic accents, a Panton-esque façade plucked from a sci-fi trilogy and refreshingly simple architecture. The kids will love the basement cinema, the splashes of primary colour, the quirky ‘flight attendants’ in their Sixties uniforms and the pop-art pool. Parents will love the free babysitting, the poolside spa treatments, the neat little kitchenettes and the cosmic styling.

Should your brood tire of splashing by the pool, watching movies in the cinema or playing Twister or Connect Four in your studio, just give the handy kids’ coordinator a call and they’ll sort surfing lessons, cookery classes, local excursions and other distractions. For mums and dads, Orbit restaurant, onsite spa treatments and Seminyak’s glittering restaurant and bar scene (and its white-sand beach) should keep boredom at bay…
