In your room

Flatscreen TV, DVD and CD player, iPod dock, WiFi, Exvoto toiletries. Free water, tea and coffee is available in every room.

Our favourite rooms

Although all rooms here are bit by Dubai's already generous standards, booking a Junior Suite will get you extra space and a private terrace. Rooms with gardens or terraces (some suites even have their own small private pools) might be ill-advised for unsteady toddlers, but could also be ideal for older kids who need extra room to let off steam. Most rooms have space for a cot or an extra bed.

The heated outdoor pool – with a dramatic red-and-black bottom – is family-friendly and supervised by a lifeguard from 9am to 6pm. It's surrounded by ultra-luxurious cabanas and overlooks the waters of the Persian Gulf.

The One & Only Private Spa is overseen by Espa and offers customised treats amid a tranquil complex of courtyards and fountains – each of the nine treatment rooms has its own small garden. Alternatively, get a massage in the seclusion of your room.

The hotel has its own prams and pushchairs to borrow.

Book ahead

Book babysitting at least two days in advance.

Three, all overseen by acclaimed French chef Yannick Alléno. 101 Dining Lounge and Bar serves up tapas and Mediterranean-inspired meals by the resort's private marina; it's a definite see-and-be-seen hotpot, with DJs on most evenings. French fine-dining restaurant Stay by Yannick Alléno, decorated in dark reds, has a unique 'pastry library' that showcases some truly Instagram-worth desserts, as well as a sharing table for dining as a group. There's also the outdoor Zest restaurant, which is the most laid-back (and perhaps the most comfortable for boisterious kids).

Family fare

Kids are welcome all the time in the outdoor Zest restaurant: during school holidays, there's an early dinner for children. Over-9s are welcome in Stay by Yannick Alléno for dinner, and in 101 Dining Lounge and Bar kids of any age can have lunch or dinner; there are highchairs at hand in every restaurant, as well as crayons and coulouring books. The kids menu has a considered selection of healthy dishes (steamed salmon and vegetables, vegetable soup and fruit skewers), alongside crowd pleasers, including burgers, Croque Monsieur and home-made lollipops for dessert. Dishes can be adapted for fussy eaters too.

Hotel Bar

Next to the lobby, you can sip cocktails, enjoy sweet and savoury snacks or take afternoon tea at the Lounge. Children are welcome.

Last orders

Breakfast is served in Zest from 7am to 11am every morning. In 101Dining Lounge and Bar, lunch is served 12.30pm–3.30pm, and dinner from 7pm–11pm. In Stay by Yannick Alléno, dinner is served 7pm–11pm. The Lounge is open for drinks and snacks from 9am–1am.

Things to do

Lounging in the spa or by the pool (while the children are enjoying supervised kids club fun) are obvious winners for grown-up guests but if you fancy being more active you can have a hit on the tennis courts or take to the water with the hotel's sea-side activities

Hotel activities

Swimming and tennis lessons can be arranged, and the gardens are ideal for running amok. The hotel can organise water sports (sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, water skiiing and the like) at its sister property, One & Only Royal Mirage. If you're a fishing fan, the gulf waters are rich with tuna, kingfish and more, and One & Only can organise a deep-sea fishing excursion to remember.

Smith tip

Even if you're only slightly into skiing, the opportunity to do it in the desert shouldn't be passed up. At Ski Dubai, skiing and snowboarding lessons are available for all levels, from adults down to three year olds.

Don't miss…

Dubai's iconic Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, is a must-visit (as long as you're not afraid of heights). Book ahead for AED125 (AED95 for under-13s; under-3s go free) or get immediate entry for AED400.

Dubai is a top choice for sun seekers, and its cosmopolitan atmosphere attracts a world-class array of chefs to local restaurants. And, the desert heat combined with human ingenuity means you can do almost any outdoor pursuit imaginable, from water skiing to… normal skiiing.

Super shoppers, the Mall of the Emirates is your heaven. From Harvey Nichols and Audemars Piguet to H&M and Forever 21, it's all here. If you need to be kid-free to get down to some serious shopping, leave the little ones at Peekaboo, the mall's creche for the under-6s. Or, explore Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai's modern take on the traditional souks. It has meandering alleys, lantern-lit passages and plenty of antiques and trinkets to buy. It's also packed with restaurants and cafés.

The impressive array of choreographed water of the Dubai Fountain in the vast, man-made Burj Khalifa Lake was designed by the same people responsible for the Bellagio's famous fountains in Las Vegas, and uses more than 6,500 lights in its show. The water shoots up to 500ft into the air; if you'd like a particularly great view, book a terrace table at the Bice Mare restaurant.

Smith & Family  Parent Panel reviews

Every property featured in the Smith & Family collection – including One&Only the Palm – has been selected and approved by parents.

From its dazzling-white grand lobby to the sea-view swimming pool, the Andalucia-inspired One & Only the Palm is slick and glamorous, but very tastefully so. Eschewing the big buildings and bling for which Dubai is simultaneously renowned and ridiculed, this resort is one of the smallest in town with just 125 rooms and suites – practically a B&B by Emirati standards – but those rooms are some of the city's most spacious and family-friendly. They aren't scrimping on the luxury, though: for an utterly shameless VIP experience, rent a cabana by the striking red-and-black-floored swimming pool for the day to ensure your own private poolside seating, shower and air-conditioning. And while the mini Smiths are enjoying the daily programme of organised activities in the KidsOnly club, grown-ups get to thide out in the small but luxurious spa, a soothingly child-free haven of shaded courtyards and refreshing fourtains where each of the nine treatment rooms has its own little garden.

Perhaps the best thing about One & Only The Palm (aside from its nothing's-too-much-trouble service) is where it is: its exclusive location at the tip of one of the Jumeirah Palm islands' fronds gives it uninterrupted city views. You'd be hard pressed to find another spot that offers such family-friendly seaside luxury so close to the centre of the city.

Smith & Family

Babies, let’s face it, aren’t really going to appreciate the finer points of such a haute-luxe lifestyle, but they sure enjoy splashing about at the shallow steps of the beautiful pool when it’s winter in London. A manageable flight and time difference, plus year-round sunshine, only amplify Dubai’s family appeal.

One&Only The Palm is the Dubai hotel for people that don’t want to go to Dubai. Cuddling up, en famille, in our own daybed-shaped kingdom, complete with mountains of king-size fluffy towels, with only the very tips of skyscrapers were visible beyond the fronds. It was from this vantage point next to the beautiful palm-flanked pool that we’d gaze, transfixed, at a tiny dot of a plane 13,000 feet up dispatch a handful of thrill-seeking parachutists who then looked for all the world as if they’d splash down next to us.

In a destination known for its super-sized approach to, well, everything, One&Only The Palm was a private, pampered and privileged haven. The activity schedule is out of this world for kids aged over four, and during school holidays they go to town: free water-skiing, one-to-one swimming lessons and tennis coaching from a professional. Otis, 4, and Lula Bee, 1, have a lot to look forward to.
