Our favourite rooms

Single-storey Pine Cliffs Residence Suites and two-storey Pine Cliffs Terrace Townhouses are the family-friendly stars at this Algarve resort: both have kitchens and laundries, offering families fabulous flexibility. Residences are in the thick of things, with pools and restaurants on the doorstep; Terraces are private and tranquil, so better suited for families with older children. For those travelling with a single child, or families with older children in search of an interconnecting room, which can be guaranteed at the time of booking, hotel rooms are ideal. Four-bedroom Villas with private pools, are ideal for larger groups or two families travelling together. Grand Deluxe hotel rooms can accommodate a cot or one extra bed; split-level Luxury Suites come with a sofa bed and (free by request) stair gates. Ocean Suites are elegant family stays, outfitted in shades of cream and taupe with wood accents and large windows; these have a full kitchen and two or three generously sized bedrooms.

There are seven outdoor pools dotted around the gardens: a main pool, which has a swim-up bar, next to the children’s pool; a tucked-away, peaceful infinity pool at the Terraces; one at the residences, one by the Ocean Suites and another by the golf course. There is a heated indoor pool at the health club (swimming caps compulsory), plus a kids pool at Porto Pirata, which offers supervised sessions when it's included on the day's activity list (subject to parents' approval).

Within the health and fitness club there'a an indoor pool where aquarobics classes are sometimes held. Entry is free for all guests, and the gym features weights and cardio machines; book the personal trainer for a gym session, or arrange yoga or pilates. The lavish Serenity Spa has 12 treatment rooms and a couples' cabin, where you can enjoy a varied menu of massages, facials or beauty treatments, including some for teens and mums-to-be; there’s even a hairdresser and barber on site. A spin around the Serenity Thermal Oasis – home to the hotel's hydrotherapy pool, dry, herbal and Himalayan salt-infused saunas, steam room, experience showers, ice fountain, Jacuzzi, and Kneipp treading pool – will leave you feeling serene and centred. There's a €20 entry fee for each guest, but if you've booked a treatment you can enter free. If you’d prefer the spa to come to you, some therapies can be set up, for a surcharge, to have in your room.

If you’re staying in one of the multi-bedroom units, bring your own baby monitors. If you want to swim indoors, you’ll need a fabulously fetching swimming cap (compulsory in the spa pool).

Food and drink

Pine Cliffs Resort – Algarve – Portugal

There are nine restaurants across the resort in high season (some are closed during low-season months). These include Jardim Colonial, which offers buffet fare for breakfast and dinner – perfect for family diners (the evening buffet changes daily). O Pescador is a classic Mediterranean-style courtyard restaurant specialising in seafood. Fish of the raw kind can be found at Yakuza by Olivier, a Japanese fusion restaurant, open till late. Piri Piri Steak House pays homage to all things chargrilled – a theme taken up by O Grill, a casual all-day, alfresco affair at the Residences. Corda Café is another all-day dining option; the informal beach and golf club eateries, plus healthy eating spot Zest – with juices and salads – make up the full quota.

Family fare

There are no age or time restrictions at any of Pine Cliffs’ restaurants or cafes. All have a stash of highchairs and there is a children’s menu available across the resort. It features starters (soup or salad options); a choice of pastas and burgers, chicken nuggets and grilled fish mains, plus a selection of vegetable side dishes; for dessert, choose from fruit salad, chocolate cake, jelly or ice-cream.

Hotel Bar

Perfectly positioned for a glass of chilled bubbly at sunset, the Mirador champagne bar sits in a prime spot on the cliffs. Portulano is the resort’s classic lobby bar, in the hotel. Children are welcome at both, but poolside Corda Café or the beach club are better suited to drinks en famille. For post-prandial drinks in high season, head to Yakuza by Olivier, where guest DJs entertain into the small hours.

Last orders

Drinks are served until 11pm at Portulano and Mirador; the bar at Yakuza is open until 2.30am in summer. O Grill is open for breakfast (7am–10.30am) and lunch (12 noon–4pm); Jardim Colonial serves breakfast, too, but not lunch. For dinner from 6.30pm, O Grill and Piri Piri Steakhouse are the places to head; Jardim Colonial opens at 7pm, Yakuza by Olivier and O Pescador serve supper from 7pm. The earliest time any kitchen closes is 10.30pm.

Things to do

Come summer – with golf, tennis, padel (a racquet game similar to squash) and watersports – Pine Cliffs will tire out even the most active of families, and parents can share childcare with dedicated hotel staff, thanks to the fabulous children’s village, Porto Pirata. Intersperse gym sessions with downtime in the gardens, relaxing by one of many pools, or enjoying a spa or beauty treatment. Below the resort, the beautiful beach is an obvious draw.

Sunny days

Golf tuition is available for adults and kids, including taster sessions for children, and a teaching bay with swing analysis for experienced players. The 18-hole minigolf at Porto Pirata is a family-friendly option. The resort has five floodlit tennis courts (two clay, three all-weather) and a tennis academy: coaching, again, has no age restrictions and there are racquets and balls to borrow.

Rainy days

There are indoor play areas for kids of all ages, including a games room with video games and table tennis, as well as DVDs to rent. Families are welcome to swim in the indoor pool at the health club, although you’ll need a swimming cap.

And there's more…

Take the lift down the cliff to the sienna-sandstone-backed golden beach at Praia da Falésia. At the beach club, learn to water-ski, kayak, jet-ski (for over-3s only), wakeboard, Ringo Ride (an inflatable raft attached to a speedboat) or book a family banana boat, inflatable couch or pedalo ride. Paddle-boarding lessons are available on request, too; for all activities, children must be accompanied by an adult. A seasonal resort train saves families the legwork around Pine Cliffs.

Smith tip

Take your swim kit to Zoomarine and stop off to cool down in the pool area. There are baby-changing facilities across the site, plus plastic cars to borrow for toddlers who don’t necessarily want to toddle.

Don't miss…

Albufeira Old Town: stroll around the whitewashed villas and narrow, cobbled lanes to find its landmark clocktower, a charming 18th-century parish church and myriad doorways framed by traditional Portuguese ceramics.

Pine Cliffs is outside Albufeira, a picturesque town on Portugal’s southerly Algarve coast. Flanked by fabulous, family-friendly beaches, it’s also within easy reach of inland treasures including flora-packed national parks and pretty whitewashed villages.

Inland, the Serra de Monchique is a mountainous park inland, prized for its plants and geology. Go it alone, or book an acitivity through Alternativtour, an outfit offering mountain biking, guided walking and canoe tours (+351 (0)965 004 337). Also away from the beach, Zoomarine is a watery-themed family attraction that brings together aquaria, theme-park rides and shows featuring the resident marine life, including sea lions and dolphins (+351 (0)289 560 300).

Smith & Family  Parent Panel reviews

Every property featured in the Smith & Family collection – including Pine Cliffs Resort – has been selected and approved by parents.

Child-friendly beach holidays and the glorious Algarve go together like sand and sea… But perhaps Pine Cliffs Resort and Smith & Family seem a less obvious pairing. It’s not every large-scale, family-oriented resort that can earn the Smith seal of approval. The pristine sands at Praia da Falésia certainly help: with safe shallow waters for swimming and awards for its cleanliness, it’s an excellent spot for a family beach holiday. At the top of the russet-stoned escarpment, the facilities and beautifully manicured grounds of Pine Cliffs are equally impressive.

The resort’s 7,000sq m children’s village, Porto Pirata, is a guaranteed hit. What child could resist its colourful pirate-ship playrooms, minigolf course, children’s pool and playground? You’re just as unlikely to find a parent immune to the charms of the resort’s spa, pretty pools, lush gardens, golf and tennis academies. Then there's the cuisine… Yes, dining across the resort is effortlessly family-friendly, but Pine Cliffs body-swerves the bland buffet style of lesser family hotels. Without leaving the gates, you can dine at a steakhouse, fish bistro, Portuguese or Japanese restaurant. And it’s this stylishly achieved balance of amenities – some for parents, some for kids, some for all – that makes Pine Cliffs a truly Smith-worthy cut above.

Smith & Family

Two giant land-locked pirate ships: the kids’ club might just be the coolest nursery we’ve ever laid eyes on. But more on that later… With two toddlers to contend with, everything in our family is about convenience. With Pine Cliffs just half an hour from Faro Airport, we were off to a good start. The first thing that struck us about the resort is how spacious it is. With the Pine Cliffs Hotel at one end and the Residences, where we were staying, at the other, dissected by a beautiful golf course that even golf-loathers like us could appreciate, we were greeted with an instant feeling of calm.

All of the apartments are spread out in a semi-circle around a central communal area with the reception, a restaurant, a fantastic pool, a health centre and a shop: everything you need for poolside intentions. Further afield, a short hop on the resort’s dinky little train (it’s allowed: we’re with kids now!) is a wider set of facilities, namely the kids’ club. With a small army of dungareed staff each with a photographic memory for children’s names, every nipper is made to feel really welcome and encouraged to get involved with the hundreds of activities available – they even have their own pool.
